The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) today announced significant ecosystem momentum behind AV2, its next-generation royalty-free video codec, just four months after the specification’s official publication. Building on the strong interest and implementation activity showcased at IBC 2026, AOMedia Members are rapidly advancing AV2 across browsers, streaming platforms, developer tools, video conferencing, multi-view video and beyond.

Announced in June 2026, AV2 reflects years of voluntary standardization efforts by Amazon, Apple, Google, Intel, Netflix, Samsung, Tencent and the wider Alliance for Open Media. The codec delivers approximately 30% greater compression efficiency than AV1 while introducing capabilities designed for emerging media experiences, including multi-stream video, real-time communications, immersive applications, higher frame rates, and enhanced HDR performance. The pace of implementation activity since publication reflects growing confidence across the industry in AV2’s ability to power the next generation of video delivery.

The rapid progress mirrors the successful adoption path established by AV1, which today powers video experiences across streaming services, browsers, mobile devices, operating systems, communications platforms, and consumer electronics. With a mature ecosystem already in place, AOMedia Members are helping accelerate AV2’s transition from specification to deployment.

Several members have already begun demonstrating and evaluating AV2 across production environments, open-source projects, and consumer-facing platforms.

Google highlighted its ongoing commitment to bringing next-generation video experiences to the web through native browser support.

“Demonstrating AV2 playback in Chrome is an exciting early step toward better video on the web,” said Jim Bankoski, VP, Engineering, Google Chrome. “We’re encouraged by the momentum around AV2, with partners like YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video exploring the format and showing strong support for the technology. Beyond faster, higher-quality streaming, AV2 lays the groundwork for new browser experiences, from better multi-view video to higher-resolution, more efficient video conferencing.”

The industry’s rapid engagement with AV2 extends well beyond playback support, however. A growing number of AOMedia Members are contributing technologies that support encoder and decoder development, compliance testing, benchmarking, validation, interoperability testing, content creation workflows, and hardware readiness. These efforts are helping ensure that content providers, application developers, device manufacturers, and platform operators can begin evaluating and deploying AV2 with confidence.

Hassene Tmar, Technical Program Manager at Meta, amplified that sentiment: “Meta is a founding member of the Alliance for Open Media and continues to be a strong supporter of its charter and open technologies. Our investment has made AV1 the most popular delivery format for Facebook and Instagram videos, improving quality of experience for billions worldwide. We’re committed to continuing that same path with AV2, carrying our investments through its productization journey and making it as successful as AV1. Beyond video, we’re investing in the Open Audio Codec (OAC) and Open Audio Renderer (OAR), driving next-generation audio coding and rendering through leadership and technical contributions in the Audio Codec Working Group.”

Dr. Iole Moccagatta, Sr. Principal Engineering, Intel Media, also noted: “The demonstrations at IBC 2026 have shown that AV2 is moving decisively from specification to implementation, enabled by development tools and interoperability testing. Intel is proud to work with our industry partners to advance that momentum through SVT-AV2, building on our long-standing commitment to AV1 through SVT-AV1 and hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding and decoding.”

Finally, Des Keane, Engineering Director at YouTube added, “YouTube champions open codecs that deliver the best quality video with the fewest playback interruptions. As of March 19, 2026, over 90% of YouTube’s catalog (weighted by watch time) is available in AV1. And we’re excited to begin streaming in AV2, which brings even better video quality to users and unlocks new multi-video capabilities. YouTube AV2 streams will be available for Web as soon as early 2027.”

Developers can access the AV2 specification, reference software, test streams, and other open-source resources through AOMedia. As adoption continues to expand, the Alliance and its Members remain focused on interoperability, implementation, and enabling broad deployment across the global video ecosystem.
